Our Visit to Marans in 2022

June 2022 Twinning Exchange

Following the last two years of COVID restrictions, this visit was greatly anticipated by all who participated. A total of 14 people travelled to Marans by various means including car and plane.

Our hosts welcomed us into their homes with their usual warmth and generosity. Old friends reunited after such a prolonged period since their previous visit to Barrow in 2019.

The programme of cultural activities was as follows;-

Day One;- Railway History and Conservation "Le Train des Mouettes" (The Train of Seagulls)

Between 1876 and 1980 there was an un-interrupted rail-link between Saujon and La Tremblade. Since 1984 it has been operated, as a heritage line, by a volunteer team. We boarded at Saujon and trundled through the countryside with a halfway stop-over at Mornac-sur-Seudre, recognised as one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages". After re-boarding at Mornac-sur-Seudre we continued on to La Tremblade for a brief refreshment halt before returning to Saujon.

Day Two;- The Naval Aeronautic Museum, Rochefort

An interesting collection of military aircraft, associated equipment and models. We enjoyed a guided tour by an ex-naval pilot with an excellent command of English and a sense of humour.

Day Three;- The 46th Plant and Garden Festival of Niort

This is an annual show, attracting over 100 exhibitors including landscape designers, nurserymen, horticulturists from France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. We have many keen gardeners in the association and so this was "just the thicket", an "absolutely radishing" day out!

Day Four;- Welcome Ceremony by the Mayor of Marans

Held at the charming town hall and gardens. A generous, warm welcome from Le Maire ( the mayor) and the Conseil municipal (town council). Kathryn, Val and Didier gave fine performances as spokespersons. It did not go un-noticed that the ceremonial twinning tree, donated by Barrow over twenty years ago, stands well in the gardens.

Day Four;- The Finale Evening

This took place at the home of Marie Noelle. Aperitifs were served in the garden in order to benefit from the beautiful surroundings and the setting sun. Tables were set out around the terrace and inside. After dinner, the traditional sing-song took place accompanied by Jan on keyboard, Peter on clarinet and Bernard on saxophone or accordion. The chorus girls line-up was Val, Sylvia and Arlette, singing away until the early hours next morning!

A happy ending to a marvellous four days of conviviality and friendship.

A Big Thank You to the Marans Comite de Jumelage!
